A Muslim child should respect and appreciate his or her parents on a daily basis. Allah (Subhaanahu Wata’ala) mentions that human beings must recognise their parents and that this is second only to the recognition of Allah (Subhaanahu Wata’ala) Himself. Throughout the Sacred Quran, we notice that parents are mentioned with appreciation and respect, even if they are senile.

In the Holy Quran, there is a very beautiful description of how parents are to be treated; Allah Subhaanahu Wata’ala Says-

Means: “And your Creator (Allah Subhaanahu Wata’ala) has decreed that you not pray (Ibadat) except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as] ‘uff’ [i.e., an expression of irritation or disapproval] and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say: ‘My Lord (Allah Subhaanahu Wata’ala)! Have mercy upon them as they brought me up (when I was) small.’ [The sacred Surwatul Isrwy: The sacred Ayaat Shareef 23 &24 (17:23-24)]

Parents have a right to be respected and obeyed by children. All parents are well wishers of children. They issue orders and instructions that are in the best interest of children (though children might think ottherwise). So it is the duty of children to obey their orders and act accordingly. Some children listen to parental orders but do not act upon these or show laziness in carrying out these orders. This causes annoyance to parents. Children should remember that annoying one’s parents can lead to the wrath of Allah (Subhaanahu Wata’ala).

Warning: Those who are disobedient to their mothers will burn in hellfire. However hard we try, we can never repay our mothers for what they have done for us, but we can at least try, and also ask Allah (Subhaanahu Wata’ala) to repay them for us. Our mothers are indeed a great blessing from Allah. We should appreciate and value this blessing as much as we can. Whilst our mothers are alive, we have a golden opportunity to guarantee ourselves Jannah and also success in this world.

Reminder: We will only truly realise the value of our mothers when they are no longer with us – when they have passed away, but then it will be too late!
